A lifelong Herkimer resident, Mr. David J. Campagna, 75, passed away on Thursday afternoon, January 4, 2024 at Wynn Hospital, Utica.
David was born in Herkimer on March 1, 1948, son of the late Julio and Celia (Danio) Campagna and a proud graduate of Herkimer High School. He entered military service and served during the Vietnam Conflict with the United States Marines Corps, receiving an honorable discharge, holding the rank of Corporal. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals and the Combat Action Ribbon.
David was an excellent cook working in various restaurants for many years. Most would remember him at the Waterfront Restaurant working alongside his friend, Rocky Fiato. He would always put his “own twist” into his favorite meals. He tended to be very excitable at times and always called a spade a spade. He was very kindhearted, and he would give you his last dollar and the shirt off his back, if you needed it. Who could forget David's famous TV appearance's? He loved his family unconditionally and was very close to his brothers. One of David’s recent life highlights was inviting some of his friends to the Waterfront Restaurant for a party. To honor his last wishes, that’s what we will do.
He was active in the community and a member of the Herkimer VFW Post #4915, Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439 and a member of the Wounded Warrior Project for twenty years. He also belonged to the Polish Community Home. He loved the casino, the horses and when he would win, he was proud as a peacock. David loved to reminisce about old times as well as growing up on the Southside of Herkimer, notably William Street. He truly had fond memories of his upbringing in Herkimer.
He leaves his nieces, nephews and cousins, a sister in law, Sue and was preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert “Bob” and Eugene “Gino” Campagna.
Please help us celebrate David’s life at the Waterfront Restaurant, Herkimer on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2023, beginning at 12 noon. Burial service will take place in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. There are no calling hours. His arrangements are under the direction and care of the family-owned Mohawk Valley Funerals and Cremations (Daniel J. Enea, Director), 7507 State Route 5, between Little Falls and St. Johnsville, 315-508-5131. Rest in peace, Dave, you will be missed by many.
