Mr. Donald R. Smith, 75, of Mohawk (Town of Danube), passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, February 4, 2025, with his family by his side.
He was born the son of the late William and Jane (Vrooman) Smith on February 28, 1949 in Cortland, NY and graduated from Mohawk High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1968. He trained for two years to become a Vietnamese Linguist, flying over 130 radio recon combat missions over Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1972, from the USAF. Donald worked briefly with NSA Breaking Code upon his return from Vietnam and he attended college in Houston to become a Respiratory Therapist. He retired from Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY where he worked in his chosen field. Donald was united in marriage to Mary (Needham) Smith in 1987 and they have one daughter, Haley Smith.
Donald enjoyed interests in fishing, boating, and classic cars. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid Green Bay Packers and Yankee fan as well as enjoying Syracuse University basketball.
He is survived by his wife, Mary at home; a daughter, Haley Smith and grandchildren, Emery Smith, Maddox LeFave, and Norrin LeFave, all of Mohawk; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Robert Lewthwaite of Rome, nephews, family, and friends. He was predeceased by his dear friend, Alan Cross also originally of Mohawk.
A celebration of life will be held in the summer at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
