James Thomas Jim Scanlon

Ilion, New York-Mr. James Thomas "Jim" Scanlon, age 78, of Prospect Street, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, March 3, 2019 at Faxton/St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford.  He had the love and comfort of his family by his side, at the time of his passing. Jim was born in Ilion on August 24, 1940, son of the late Frank and Gladys (Richardson) Scanlon.  He shared over 35 years of love and togetherness with his companion and wife, Helen Lapoint. He received his education in Rome schools and held employment with Herkimer High School following his retirement from Library Bureau, Herkimer.     A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Jim took great pride in his family. He was an avid sports fan, specifically a die-hard Syracuse fan, NY Giants and Met's Fan.  He enjoyed vacationing, dining out at his favorite restaurants and watching the Weather Channel and MSNBC.  He was the biggest fan in the bleachers for all his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.  In his younger years he was passionately involved with softball in the Mohawk Valley, Jim played in many leagues and eventually moved into umpiring after many years. He enjoyed meeting lifelong friends for breakfast and reminiscing about old times and was always up for a good cup of coffee. Jim lived a life surrounded by his family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew this wonderful man. Survivors include his loving family; his wife, Helen at home; children: Lori Salvagni (Roger), Robert Scanlon (John Brogan), Jamie Knisley (David), Tim Loomis(Theresa), James Scanlon(Deceased), Kelli Boulia(Chuck), Jamey Jacquays(Corrie); grandchildren: Trisha Steenburg, Kyle Salvagni, Bradley Russell(Deceased), Nathan Cress, Amanda Loomis, Chelsi Loomis, Brianna Loomis, SSG. Jason Scanlon, James Scanlon, Jarrod Scanlon, Jessica Boulia, Samuel Jacquays, Thomas Jacquays and Calvin Jacquays; great grandchildren: Ava Steenburg, Jameson Scanlon, June Scanlon, Mable Scanlon, Dorothy Scanlon; his siblings, Eleanor Shemanske (Ken); many nieces, nephews and cousins.  He also leaves his beloved canine companion, Molly whom he loved dearly.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Scanlon. A memorial celebration of life will be privately held at Mohawk Valley Funerals and Cremations (town of Manheim), 7507 State Route 5, between Little Falls and St. Johnsville, 315-508-5131.  There are no calling hours. Burial will take place later in the spring in St. Agnes Cemetery, Ilion.  Contributions in his memory may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 110 Lomond Ct., #1, Utica, NY 13502.  The family offers their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Faxton/St. Luke’s for their kindness and compassion during this difficult time.  To light a candle or offer an online note of remembrance, please click above.
