John Vincent Maiuccoro

October 24, 1940 — November 30, 2023

Latham, New York

With great sorrow we share that on November 30, 2023, following a courageous and hard-fought battle, John Vincent (Goody) Maiuccoro ascended into the arms of our Lord. Born on October 24, 1940 in Schenectady, NY, John was the son of the late Guarino and Angela (DellaVentura) Maiuccoro.

John ‘Goody’ Maiuccoro and his Imperial Pools have been an icon in the swimming pool industry for the past 60 years. John's passion for creating, designing, innovating and advancing recreational pool-industry products, while maintaining affordability, established the foundation for millions of home-owners across America to enjoy the luxury of a family swimming pool in their own backyards!  From John’s beginnings as a young man in the pool-installation business, to his creation of five separate internationally recognized business ventures, no task has ever been beneath him. Whether it was the oft painstaking task of digging holes for pools in the early days or John’s dozens of US Patents and Copyrights, he respected and executed each task with precision and care. As years passed John’s ever-present creativity, combined with a strong desire to push his industry forward for families and independent business operators, gave way to the birth of four new business ventures: Saratoga Spa and Bath Co, The Vinyl Works, A-Frame Pool and Spa retail store, and Imperial Distribution with 10 centers across 8 states. Over this illustrious career as an industry leader, John built Imperial Pools and his affiliated businesses from a small shop in Watervliet, NY, to well respected and sought-after brands recognized around the world. Throughout his journey John led by example and amassed countless friends in the industry. But those who meant the most to John were the thousands of employees to whom he gave a start and a career in the industry. John enjoyed working with them, deeply appreciated them and connected with their families ~ many for over 40 years, as well as multi-generational-relationships with customers and their families that span over decades.

John dreamed big so the average American homeowners’ dreams could come true; he reveled in the idea of making it possible for anyone to say ‘I have a pool in my back yard’.

John’s greatest treasure was the love of his life, his devoted wife Katie whom he adored.  While Katie and John first met in Albany, NY, they truly fell in love when they serendipitously met while separately vacationing in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. From that moment forward they were inseparable. Joined in marriage the summer of 1980, they were bonded to each other in love to the last moments of John’s life. Partners in everything, John mentored Katie’s education in the swimming pool industry and she worked side by side with him as together they grew the business for over 40 years. Then, growing their businesses beyond Imperial Pools, the couple developed a multi-state property portfolio that includes manufacturing, warehousing and retail. Over the years John and Katie loved to travel. In particular they journeyed to America’s southern states; traveled by train in Europe including the Orient Express and the Royal Scotsman; and experienced the Olympics in Lake Placid, Atlanta, Norway, Canada and France. Most recently John and Katie entered the thoroughbred horse world, both as breeders and owners of the racing stable Roll the Dice Thoroughbreds. John looked forward to his visits to Lexington, Kentucky for thoroughbred auctions, stallion shows and he loved watching his horses run at various tracks, especially the Saratoga Race Course.

John’s youth was a happy one.  Growing up in Schenectady, NY and being a member of the first class to graduate from  Niskayuna High School in 1959, John demonstrated his leadership skills from an early age as Student Council President in 1958. At SUNY Cobleskill, John studied Business Management, joined Theta Gamma Fraternity and was 1961 Student Council Vice President.

As an exceptionally talented individual, John’s energy, intelligence, and passion for adventure led him to pursue many interests. All who knew John knew that he could often be found working on his large auto collection. His love for automobile mechanics began as a pre-teen working in his family’s garages of Carmen Goody Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in Watervliet, NY.  In 1999, John built a Corvette Nomad, starting with only the frame and the original blue prints  drawn for the clay model makers who constructed the original Corvette Nomad car. John loved restoring automobiles from his youth, winning countless awards including the 2005 Senior Award at the AACA National Fall Meet in Hershey, PA. John’s appreciation for automotive adventures extended onto the race track. As a member of the Vintage Sports Car Association (VSCA) he would often race his vintage race cars on tracks such as Lime- Rock Park, Watkins’ Glen, and NH Motor Speedway. John’s accolades for these endeavors include the 2007 Award on the Mount Washington Auto Road (Race to the Clouds), which he won on his first try. John made many good friends in the auto world who frequently called up ‘The Car Guy’ for advice on historic vintage car restoration and he always thought of himself as a true Motor-Head.

With a talent for mechanical drawing and drafting, and a studious appreciation for architecture, John turned his talents towards building and design. John sought inspiration in trips across America to appreciate various architecture. From there he went on to design and build several of his businesses-offices, factories, as well as private residences in Florida, New York State and Kennebunkport, Maine.

Strong in his faith, John’s generosity of spirit could be felt by all every day of the year; but none more than during the holiday season. John loved Christmas! His home would be decorated with magical holiday décor, including 250,000 white lights leading up the driveway. John truly considered this the most important event of the year, and he dearly relished every Christmas dinner with his family. His favorite holiday party was always The Kids' Christmas Party, held annually to celebrate all of the families in the Imperial Pool Co.

To know John was to know the man with turquoise eyes, a warm ever-present smile, and a genuine interest in you. And to know John was to appreciate a man with a kind and sensitive heart who cared deeply for those he loved and who loved him.

Losing John is hard and sad, but we know he has not left us. Because he was exceptionally present and purposeful in his thousands of individual and simple interactions with each of us, he has left us with precious, personal, lasting memories and messages we will cherish every day of our lives. May God bless and keep him until we see him again.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years Cathi Ann (Katie) Brennan Maiuccoro formally of Cohoes, NY and now or Kennebunkport, ME and Jupiter, FL; his sister Rose Marie Lantz; his mother-in-law Grace M. Brennan; sister-in-law Mary Grace (Jack) Brennan Reed; brother-in-laws: James (Theresa) Brennan; Hon. John Brennan; William Brennan; Tommy (Terri) Brennan; and Anthony (Susan) Brennan; his sister, Carol (Ray) Koch; his brother, Gary (Cindy) Maiuccoro; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. John was predeceased by his sister, Joann DiBianco and his son, Todd Maiuccoro.
