Margaret Ann (Gedart) Maltby

Mohawk, NY-Margaret Ann Maltby (nee Gedart), 73, of Mohawk, NY, passed away at The Grand Nursing and Rehab in Ilion, NY, on Sunday, October 14th, 2018. Born three days before Christmas in Rockville Center, NY to Janos Gedart and Sadie “Sally” Herman, Margaret was raised on a family farm in Cherry Valley, NY before graduating from Cherry Valley Central School in 1963. She continued her education at the University of Puerto Rico, and at SUNY Oneonta where she attained a Bachelors of Arts in Spanish in 1968 and a Masters in Education in 1973.  A lifelong teacher and mentor to students with special needs, Margaret was employed by the Herkimer County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) from 1968 to 2003.  Working with children from all over Central New York who experienced a range of complex educational needs, she derived perhaps her greatest satisfaction from facilitating her students’ progress, and her gifts to generations of local young people will be long remembered.  Margaret married Kurt Christian Maltby of Watertown, NY in 1970, and together they raised three children who survive her, Lorraine, Erika Paige, and Adam Christopher. Apart from her teaching career and family, Margaret was an avid worldwide travel enthusiast, frequenting South America, Europe, and Hawaii. She also relished her hobbies of cake decorating, bowling, gardening, and playing piano.  Margaret is also survived by her cousins, Marcia Naomi Berger and Gloria Finkelstein. A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM, Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018 at the Mohawk Reformed Church, 20 Otsego St., Mohawk, NY with Pastor Brian Engel, officiating. A reception will follow at the church hall. Margaret was devoted to this church and to its congregation, and together we will honor her extraordinary life and legacy.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Herkimer County Humane Society, or Herkimer ARC.  Mohawk Valley Funerals and Cremations (Daniel J.
