Mattie (Farber) Hinman

September 22, 1918 — March 15, 2018

Herkimer – Mattie Farber Hinman, 99, of Shells Bush Road, peacefully entered into eternal rest, March 15, 2018.  She resided at Folt’s Home, Herkimer. She was born September 22, 1918, the youngest of five children of Martha Stack Farber and Fred Farber.  A lifelong resident of Herkimer, she lived in her family home on Shells Bush Road until only a few years ago.  She was a graduate of Herkimer High School, and after graduation she worked as a manager at Munger’s Department Store.  During WWII she worked for E. Remington & Sons in Ilion, making Anti-aircraft shells and meeting the love of her life. On June 12, 1943 Mattie married James Walker Hinman in New York City.  James served in the Merchant Marines until 1947, while Mattie stayed with her mother and raised their first daughter.  At the war’s end they took over ownership of Mattie’s family homestead.   There they raised three children and had a happy marriage of 60 years.  Mattie was always dedicated to her family and friends, ensuring that the door was always open to all. During the 1960’s she returned to work for General Electric.  She wished to pursue a career in nursing, thus in 1970 she trained as a nurse’s aide.  Mattie spent the rest of her working life providing for others at the Ilion Nursing Home.  After retirement, she and Jim were able to extensively travel across the U.S.  and Europe. Mattie had many hobbies throughout her life: knitting, sewing and gardening in her large flower and vegetable gardens.   She was also an excellent cook, relishing the large delicious homemade meals she would prepare for her expanding family.  She was a longstanding member of the Dutch Reform Church of Herkimer and the Eastern Star. Mattie was predeceased by her husband and daughter, Maxine Hinman Lorang.  Surviving are her daughter Cynthia Hinman Johnson and her husband Kenneth Johnson (Bedford Corners, N.Y.), her son James Mark Hinman (Herkimer) and her son-in-law Wendell Lorang (Slingerlands).   She was a loving Grandmother to Kenneth Jewell Johnson (N.Y.C.) and Samantha Johnson Frawley.  Samantha and her husband, James Frawley (Bedford Corners, N.Y.), presented Mattie with two Great-Grandchildren – Isabella Maxine Frawley and Cole Edward Frawley. As she wished, a graveside service to celebrate Mattie and her beloved late husband, James, will be held on May 12, 2018 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer at 12 noon with the Rev. Kyle Nesbitt, pastor of the Herkimer Reformed Church, officiating. The two are deeply missed by their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nephews and nieces. Expressions of sympathy may be made by donations to the American Red Cross.  Daniel J. Enea Funeral and Cremation Care, 5860 State Route 5 (near St. Mary’s Cemetery) between Herkimer and Little Falls, 315-508-5250 is assisting the Hinman family with funeral arrangements.  To add to her online memorial, click above.
