RaeEllen Louise Austin, of Philadelphia, NY, born January 17, 1956 in Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2025.
She was the beloved wife of Gregory V. Austin and a devoted mother to her only child, Ashley R. Austin. An incredibly loving grandmother, she cherished her three grandchildren, Dominik, Mila, and Cullen, more than anything in this world. RaeEllen was the daughter of Doris E. Schmelz (Foley) and the late Rudolph J. Schmelz. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Timothy M. Kotary; brother Joseph Schmelz, his wife Cindy, and their children, Gregory & Jacob; sister-in-law Rosalie Austin and her children, Austin & Justin; brother-in-law Simeon Austin, his wife Marlys, and their children, Andrew & Katie; and her dear friend of many years, Lavale Edwards, who was there for her until the very end.
RaeEllen had a generous spirit and a loving heart. She was known for her quick wit and infectious laugh, bringing warmth and joy to those around her. She welcomed new people into her life with open arms; always making others feel welcomed, loved, and included.
She found great joy in reading and traveling; passions that enriched her life and broadened her perspective on the world. Her kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her.
RaeEllen’s family would like to thank the staff of the Wynn Hospital and Abraham House of Rome for their incredible care and respect shown to RaeEllen in her final days. To honor RaeEllen’s final wishes, there will be no services held. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider instead making a donation to Abraham House, 417 N., Washington St., Rome, NY 13340. Arrangements for cremation are under the direction and care of Daniel J. Enea-Director of Mohawk Valley Funerals and Cremations, 7507 State Route 5, between Little Falls and St. Johnsville, 315-508-5131.
