Obituary

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Wayne Johnson, known to most as “Bobby,” a man whose laughter, humor, and larger-than-life personality left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Wayne passed away after a sudden medical event, spending his final week in the hospital surrounded by an incredible support system. Throughout that week, a steady stream of loved ones filled his room — a powerful reflection of the countless lives he touched and the relationships he built over the years.

Wayne was born to Edward and Norma Johnson on August 4, 1952, and passed away March 14, 2026, at the age of 73. He finished at Mohawk High School in 1971. Wayne married Debra Kinney on May 8, 1982, and together they had three children. Though their marriage later ended, their friendship strengthened.

Wayne was known for his wit, numerous jokes, and his ability to make people laugh when they needed it most. If there was a joke to be told — even an inappropriate one — Wayne was usually the one telling it. His humor and playful personality were a constant source of smiles for those around him. Beyond the laughter, Wayne was someone who showed up when people needed him, always ready to lend a hand.

Wayne loved the outdoors and spent much of his life camping, fishing and enjoying rodeos. More than anything in the world, Wayne loved being a grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he found great happiness in spending time with them, sharing laughs, telling stories, and watching them grow.

Wayne enjoyed taking car rides to no where in particular, visiting his daughter in the Adirondacks, working on cars with his son, and of course driving his grandchildren anywhere they asked to go. Time spent with his family and the simple moments together were what meant the most to him.

Wayne spent decades volunteering at the Herkimer County Fair, his time there meant a great deal to him. He wast just there for the week of the fair he helped with event winter, spring, summer and fall. While there he met people he considered family and built friendships that lasted a lifetime. During the fair he could always be found leading kiddie events and cheering each and everyone on even if his voice was gone.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Norma Johnson; his father-in-law, Paul Kinney; his infant son, Steven; his brother and sister in law, Kenneth and Rose Johnson; and his son-in-law, Daniel Hitchcock.

Wayne is survived by his former wife of over 30 years and best friend, Debbie Johnson; his daughter Heidi Hitchcock (Matthew Cahill) and their children Addison, Courtney, Natalie, Mason, Liam, Henry, and Ty; and his son Michael Johnson (Tiffany Johnson) and their children Aaliyah, Lacee, Desiree, Damien, Leona, and Aurora. He is also survived by his chosen sons Ryan Hilts and Chris Roberts, His sister Sharon, many sister-in-laws, many very close nieces and nephews, his “Prindle Family”, as well as too many close friends to list — because once you became his friend, he loved you like family.

Wayne will be remembered for his humor, his generosity, and his ability to bring people together. His stories, laughter, and love for his family — especially his grandchildren — will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Though he may be gone from our sight, the laughter Bobby shared, the love he gave, and the memories he created will continue to echo through the lives of his family and grandchildren for generations to come. Celebrating of life will be held at the Herkimer county fairgrounds June 13th starting at 2pm
