William George Pratt

Mr. William George Pratt, age 79, a longtime resident of Cedarville, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, October 9th, 2023, in the peace of his home, with his loving family by his side.

William was born on February 21st, 1944 in Herkimer, NY son of the late William C. and Clara V. (Waterbury) Pratt. William attended Herkimer schools and was a Veteran with the US Navy serving from 1962 until 1966, receiving an honorable discharge holding the rank of Radarman, 3rd Class.  He served during the Vietnam Conflict and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.  William married Margaret (Dollie) Whalen on February 24th, 1967 and spent 56 wonderful years together.

Community came first in Mr. Pratt's life.  He was a active and proud member/interior firefighter with the Cedarville Fire Department for 40 plus years and their past Fire Chief for 8 of those years.  He volunteered as a Bush League coach, Boy Scout leader, a Fire Commissioner (Past Chairman) and was part of the USS Joseph Strauss DDG 16 Association.  A proud veteran having dedicated 4 years of his life to our country, he was a member of the VFW Post 2338 of West Winfield.  

He enjoyed the outdoors and was a member of the ADK Mountain Climbing Club. William enjoyed mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, camping, fishing, snowmobiling, hunting and boating. He always put family first and enjoyed and treasured his time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Survivors include cherished family, his wife, Dollie Pratt, his son, William J. Pratt and daughter-in-law Toni Ann (Guistra) Pratt, his daugher, Michele (Pratt) Febus and son-in-law, Keith Febus, a brother, James Pratt, his adored grandchildren, Ryan Giammella, Collin Giammella, Jillian Pratt and Annie Pratt and also many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

William's family would like to thank the Veterans Administration and Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., for all their compassion and time they spent with William and his family. They would also like to thank Cedarville Ambulance crew, especially Ralph Wellington, and Fred Sinclair, for their time and dedication given to William. Cremation arrangements are under the direction and care of the locally owned and operated Mohawk Valley Funerals and Cremations, 7507 State Route 5, between Little Falls and St. Johnsville, 315-508-5131. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a graveside memorial service commencing at 11:30 am on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Cedarville Cemetery with Chaplain Kenneth Palmer, officiating.  There are no calling hours.  Military honors will be offered by the US Navy and an honor guard will be presented by members of the Cedarville Fire Department, who will also recite the Fireman's Prayer. Members of the VFW Post 2338 are asked to pay their respects at the graveside on Sunday.
